I started in this business in 1988, jr. year of high school, not knowing it would have taken me this far. I was such a tom boy, all I wanted to do was rap and write poetry, actually rapping was the ticket to my exposure and the key to freedom.
I hooked up with the right brothers that lead me to record my first single, which ended up being a #1 single according to Billboard and RIAA. I had traveled Europe at 17 on a 5 month tour and returned home to receive a gold plaque, the first female rapper to get a gold plaque from Chicago? Wow!
I had a career change quick! With no parental supervision, money and a fool will soon part.
It wasn't until I moved in homeless shelter and stayed a resident for 10 months, that's when I realized I needed a hustle but I needed to stand on something that I could master. Hair! I always could do hair, I always understand lines, angles and numbers so while I was at the shelter, I put myself thru beauty school, and master cuts, bleaching, tinting and evrything I needed to get out make money so I would never return to the shelter.
I was very successful with hair, I had a clientel that was ridiculous! I made so much money it made me nerves, But I wasn't happy...... I dreamed to be a dj like my uncle. 2 turntables and a mixer.....
Eventually I got bored with hair and one Saturday I was listening to the radio and I heard a personality that I went to high school with, amazed I felt like if he could get a job on radio, so could I....Not knowing how LONG it would take to get on radio.
I called the assistant program director every Monday Wednesday and Friday, every week, every month for 3 YEARS.
FINALLY a break thru, just when I ws going to give up, God showed up and showed out. I was blessed that I got hired at 1075 Wgci the winter of 1999.
I trained with Rick Party and First Lady and eventually I was on my own.......
I worked the mix show and my mixers were, Dj Pharris Thomas, Steve Maestro and Boolu
I asked Steve would he show me how to dj and he said, Only if you take it seriously, don't waste my time, do something with this, little did he know I waited all my life to be a dj....
